I’ve always considered myself to be somewhat of a “life enthusiast”, a term which often makes people chuckle.
At birth, I was bestowed the name Franco Marcello Alo, of Italian descendance. I was raised in the bustling nightlife-thriving, poutine-eating, food-mosaic, more-bars than-you-can-count-them city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
From the youngest age imaginable, pencil & paper became an extension of my creative mind. Different forms of art became outlets to my world otherwise unknown. Early on at the age of 6, I wanted to be a cartoon artist. Then came archeologist, explorer, aeronautical engineer and finally between the ages of 18 – 23, I tried to reach stardom with music. The latter career led me to venture to many places in the world I had always dreamt of visiting. Whether succumbing to some Southern BBQ in Louisiana or attending a tea ceremony in Japan, my goal started to become evident. I had a thirst like no other to share with those I loved what great beauty was to be found across oceans and on our very own mainland.
Now as a trained ecologist, I am most curious about the interactions between organisms and their environment. If that organism is Homo sapiens and a man’s obsession with his 1976 Chevrolet, I want to capture that moment. Nature is vast and complex, as are many things, thus my appreciation of both my yin and yang, my black and white, have led me to be nature’s photographer; seeking to find explanations behind the art billions of people witness everyday. The art of life! “Where does photography fit in?” you may ask. Photography is my tool for documenting and establishing an image. My new illustrative representation. That true beauty exists everywhere and anywhere. Perception changes from individual to individual and that’s fact. Also fact, people can be influenced and their perception changed from that point on. That is my vision; this is my journey!
I have recently sold all my Canon gear to make the much anticipated switch to a more compact, light, and yet still very high performance camera with the Fujifilm X-T2. My reasons for switching are many, and the result of a few unfortunate accidents with my Canon gear. Gear is gear and ultimately though a tool to express art, it remains a tool. The real magic happens between our ears so I do not discredit one company or give merit to one. Simply different solutions to people’s needs!
